Wendy M. McNamara, a Republican, will challenge Trent VanHaaften for Indiana 76th District Representative.
 
McNamara, a Mount Vernon resident, is director of Early College High School for the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation and an adjunct instructor at the University of Southern Indiana.
 
“My leadership will not be asking for your vote based on party or platform, but on the issues directly affecting Indiana,” McNamara said in announcing her candidacy at the Posey County Courthouse in Mount Vernon, Ind. She will also announce her candidacy at the Howell Wetlands at 4 p.m..
 
McNamara said it is time for change to better our communities, rather than change for change's sake. She said her work is based on principle, conviction and new and independent leadership.
 
Van Haaften, D-Mount Vernon, has served the district since 2003.
 
"She is sharp and accomplished in government," said Brenda Goff, 8th Congressional District GOP Treasurer. "She is not political but she wants to make a positive change and offer transparent government."
 
The 76th District includes all of Posey County and the Southern tip of Gibson County and a portion of Western Vanderburgh County.
  
McNamara is a former assistant principal of North High School and former supervisor of social studies. In her 14 years with the school corporation she has also served as a teacher and department chair at Bosse High School and at Harrison High School. She is an adjunct professor of world history at the University of Southern Indiana and has taught political science and social studies methods at the University of Evansville.
  
McNamara is the Indiana Congressional District 8 We the People: Constitution, Coordinator, Executive Board Member for the Indiana Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (IASCD), and a Committee Member for the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Program of Excellence. In the past, she has served as a Social Studies ISTEP Item Reviewer for the State of Indiana.
  
Most recently, she was recognized by the Indiana Council for Economic Education as the Lawrence Senesh Administrator of the Year. She has been in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and received the Bosse Teacher of the Year Award for 2001–2002 and the Indiana National Guard Nighthawk Educator Award in 2000 and 2006.
  
McNamara is a member of the Indiana Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (IASCD), Association for School Administrators (ASA), Indiana Association of Secondary School Principals (IASSP), National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), Program of Excellence Committee Member and the Posey County Republican Women's Club.
 
Her husband, Marc, is the Ink Division Manager at Image Inks in Evansville.
